Man I dread those middle of the night wake ups.
Don’t you? No mom likes to hear the sound of her child coughing. Especially when the coughing starts in the middle of a peaceful slumber. But a child’s cough knows no manners and middle of the night wake ups are usually what we get when it comes to a coughing child. There are several home remedies you may want to try with your child to help calm an irritating cough and I cover many options in my natural remedies for croup and cough post. One of the things I don’t recommend giving your child is an over the counter cough medicine. Not only have these products been founds to be LESS effective than plain old raw honey, but also they contain some very questionable ingredients… some that have never been tested on children.
But when the coughing and sleepless nights start you want to do SOMETHING…right!? If one of my children comes down with a cough, I make a batch of our homemade children’s cough syrup. This recipe uses raw honey and mullein leaves, ingredients that help to thin mucus, soothe irritated throats and encourage sleep, too.
This recipe is very easy to make and safe for children over 1 year of age. Pair this recipe with some natural immune boosters to help your child get better quickly. Enjoy!
- 2 tablespoons mullein leaves
- 1 cup filtered water
- ½ cup raw buckwheat honey
-
Over medium heat combine herbs and water. Bring to a boil for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let sit for 30 minutes.
-
Strain out herbs. Pour water into a glass jar and let cool. Add raw honey to the cool water and stir to combine. Store in fridge for up to 1 month.
